Dakota County Judge Arrested for DWI

Dakota County Judge Michael Sovis plead guilty on Wednesday, May 22nd to a third degree DWI. The arrest took place on Christmas Eve after Sovis had run into several parked cars. Sovis BAC was more than three times the legal limit, which is .08 in Minnesota.

Sovis’ lawyer David Ayers spoke on his behalf to reporters saying Sovis is very remorseful for his actions. Sovis is now asking Governor Mark Dayton for an early retirement, apparently due to other medical issue after being sentence to two years probation and a $500 fine.

Judge Sovis is an Apple Valley resident and was booked in Ramsey County on Christmas Eve for his DWI. Sovis was released after posting a $12,000 bond. It is absolutely disheartening to see someone of such high legal standard disregard the law and safety of the city and citizens they defend. One can only hope a situation like this is an isolated incident and will not be a trend with either Sovis or other important legal figures.
